Saltillo Cleaning, Sealing, Staining, Restoring and Maintenance |
The art of Saltillo tile restoration is little known, but Saltillo tiles are resilient and will usually respond well to restoration methods, sometimes to the point of appearing like new.
The trick to properly restoring Saltillo lies in understanding what needs to be accomplished and then using the correct combination of chemical and mechanical means to do so.
The first step is correctly identifying any material that may be coating the Saltillo. This coating almost always needs to be removed prior to cleaning and sealing the Saltillo. The amount of effort required to remove this coating is dependant upon what the coating is comprised of. The Stone Poets always tests these coatings for ease of removal before beginning the resotration of any Saltillo floor.
After the tile has been successfully stripped, the raw tiles need to be cleaned with an aggressive alkaline cleaner, then rinsed thoroughly with a pH neutral cleaner before being sealed with a matte, satin, or high gloss finish sealer. If desired by the homeowner, the Saltillo tiles can be stained one of five standard Saltillo stain colors before sealing. See our page on this website for more information about Saltillo stains and how they work. Once complete, a Saltillo floor restored by The Stone Poets can look like new again. Even more important, a Saltillo floor restored by The Stone Poets will be easier to maintain, and, if regular maintenance services are scheduled, will never have to be restored again.
